Memoria (report) on construction of the railway to Lago Buenos Aires and junction with the San Antonio to Lago Nahuel Huapí line (second part)

General state of the works at 31 December 1912

A copy of the original text is available in Spanish - click here to go to it.

Glossary of words used in specific ways:
Memoria – Formal progress report.
Patagonico – The type of chassis-less bogie water carrier produced by Nesseldorfer for use in Patagonia.
Plataforma – A bogie flat wagon generally provided with pockets along the side of the sole-bars and buffer beams to allow the fitting of temporary sides (sometimes referred to as barranda) needed for some traffic, eg their seasonal conversion into open sheep wagons.
Resident Engineer is used in this report for the Argentine term Ingeniero Director or simply Director, as meaning the person in overall charge of the Works at Puerto Deseado.
Superiority – A literal translation of the Argentine term, used in the context of this report, as referring to the person, and the department of, the Inspector General de Construcciones of the Ferrocarriles del Estado based in Buenos Aires.
Tapada – Spanish English dictionaries do not show a translation for this word in relation to railway use. A study of the definitions given by the Real Academia Española, and the contexts in which it is used, suggests that it could well mean the English term boxing, used in connection with permanent way works – that is the placing of loosely consolidated ballast above the level of the well consolidated ballast supporting the sleepers, between and at the ends of the sleepers, and in Argentine practice, covering the top surface of the sleeper by about a couple of inches to provide protection against fire. Half tapada thus means placing the first part of this material in a two stage process for carrying out this work.
Works – Used as a translation of the Argentine word Construcción to mean the whole project, including completing the the detailed design and setting out of the line, its construction including much of the procurement of materials and labour, and its operation while the railhead is being advanced.

PART II

GENERAL STATE OF THE WORKS AT 31 DECEMBER 1912

I – Land acquisition.-

There have been no need for land acquisition, as all the land was already in government ownership.

II – Mapping.-

1) – Setting-out works carried out:
a) Setting-out on the natural ground level, as preparation for earthworks completed to Km. 262.000 (original measure), equivalent to Km. 263.628,50 (final measurement).
b) Setting-out along the formation level prior to laying the rails, completed to the same point.
c) Repetition of previous levelling, as preparation, to second track lift, carried out as this work advanced.

2) – Variations introduced into the mapping.
There are four, all located in the first section built. See the previous Memorias.

3) – Total increase.
See the previous Memorias.

4) – Variations introduced in the chainage and dimensions of the stations.
a) Centre-line of passenger building at Km. 0.000 station changed to Km. -0.075,50.
b) Centre-line of Km. 20.500 station (original measure) changed to Km. 20.200 (original measure), equivalent to Km. 21.077,18 (final measurement).
c) The length of Km. 59.975 station (original measure) increased from 950 m. to 1,000 m.
d) Centre line of Km. 94.250 station (original measure) changed to Km. 94.000 (original measure), equivalent to Km. 95.181,70 (final measurement).
e) Centre-line of Km. 220.800 (original measure) changed to Km. 222.775,50 (original measure) equivalent to Km. 224.404 (final measurement). The remaining centre-lines and lengths have been maintained, and the differences noted in their names, defined by their chainage, are due solely to the changes in the length of the line.
f) It is proposed to eliminate in the profile Km. 266.500 and Km. 281.350 stations, and replace them with a single one, of the same type, which will be located about Km. 275.000.

III – Heights.-

1) – Variations introduced in the profile: none, apart from those relating to the four variations identified in the previous Memorias.

IV - Earthworks.-

a) Main line.- All completed as far as Km. 262.000 (original measure), equivalent to Km 263.628,50 (final measurement). In progress - none.
Shortly the earthworks upwards of Km. 263.628,50 (final measurement) will be started.

b) Stations.-
1) Completely finished:
Km. 21, 41, 61, 81, 95, 121, 142, 162, 182, 202 and 224.

V – Permanent Way.-

a) Main Line
1)Total length assembled between Km. -1.600 and Km. 262.369, equivalent to 263.969.
2) Assembly completed to Km. 262.369 (final measurement). Levelling and tapada: Completed to Km. 174.000. In progress to Km 254.000. Ballast and railing: In respect of this I repeat what I said in my previous Memoria; “There has been no skimping of effort whatsoever in creating a line in good order for working, having dedicated the greatest attention to the quality of the ballast, and to the careful carrying out of the lifts. The finished track is seated on a bed of almost pure gravel of the appropriate size, which provides an unimprovable base for the sleepers.”. During the year which has ended, the levelling work has been continued with the same demanding spirit, having opened in addition to the gravel quarries at Km. 69, Km. 93 and Km. 130, mentioned in the previous Memoria, another two, at Km. 159.000 and Km. 225.000.
As has been reported previously, the track has had three lifts, at sufficiently long intervals to ensure excellent stability.
The track has been laid with second-hand (Dawolais [sic, Dowlais] Steel from the FC CA) rail as far as Km 35.266; with new Argentino rail 10 m. long from this point to Km. 251.631; with the same type of rail but 12 m. long between Km. 151.631 and Km. 246.183; and with 37 kg. / m. rail from this last point to the end.
