The numbers on the map below indicate a selection of the main railways built in the area. Some of them represent more than one route or system. Others are not shown here, because of overcrowding, or because details are scanty, or merely because they were short hand-worked lines. Whilst there are thirty locations identified, the area covered in this site had upwards of fifty railways of one kind or another and probably nearer one hundred.
The key down the right hand side gives the name and the appropriate chapter. Clicking on the link will take you to the first page of that chapter though not necessarily to the precise page for that line.
